The InfraCal2 Soot Meter provides an easy-to-use ASTM approved test method for measuring percent soot in diesel engine lubricating oils. The Soot Meter is based on proven IR technology, originally developed by Wilks, and is used in lubrication oil and engine testing laboratories worldwide. It is also ideal for truck, bus or off-highway fleets, onboard ships, construction or mining sites and power generation stations. Results correlate to the TGA (thermogravimetric analysis) reference method ASTM D7686 and FTIR methods.

The InfraCal2 has added features such as touch screen display, data storage and transfer, a multi-language interface and password protected settings.  The internal battery pack allows for portability and up to 12 hours continuous use, providing results in under a minute. Samples are applied to a scratch-resistant cubic zirconia attenuated total reflectance (ATR) sample plate and easily cleaned with a cloth or paper towel.  No solvents requiring special ventilation, expensive waste disposal or difficult to clean cells are needed. The analysis can be done by non-technical personnel with no formal training and is ideal for lab or field use for the following applications:

  • Measurement range: 0 - 15% soot
  • Instrument repeatability: +/- 0.2
  • Complies with ASTM Method D7686
  • No Dilution or Sample Preparation
  • Rapid analysis - less than 30 seconds per sample

Ideal for:

  • Oil testing labs - achieve comparable results to TGA or FTIR in a fraction of the time
  • Engine test labs - obtain on-the-spot assessment of the engine test progress
  • Fleet maintenance shops - check soot level to know exactly when to schedule oil changes
  • Construction or mining sites - stay operational with oil condition checks
  • On-board-ship - no need to return to port to monitor oil condition
  • Power generation stations - monitor the quality of the lubricating oil without waiting for off-site lab results
